With highly-implausible and preposterous (but nevertheless thrilling) scenes of pandemonium and hell on Earth, this summer blockbuster is the disaster movie to end all disaster movies. The movie never strays from the same generic and formulaic plotlines seen in nearly all of the director's films - a dysfunctional family in turmoil that must overcome personal issues in order to survive a common adversity. Granted, most horror films struggle in limited release, but this was even worse than most.Easily deserving of the moniker "The King of the Disaster Movies," Roland Emmerich delivers yet another CGI-laden extravaganza with '2012' meant purely for popcorn entertainment. It earned very good reviews, but completely bombed at the box office.
The Bay is actually a horror film that opened in limited release last year. The Bay is a documentary about the Hudson Bay Company, a Canadian retail chain that is the oldest company in North America and one of the oldest companies in the world, having been incorporated in 1670. It is worth paying the extra money for 3D, but not a lot of people have made the leap to 3D just yet. The release that gets that honor is Wreck-It Ralph on either Blu-ray or 3D. It is absolutely a must have however, the Blu-ray is shovelware, which precludes it from being the Pick of the Week. The best film coming out this week is Schindler's List, which makes its Blu-ray debut this week.
By the time we get outside of the top ten, we start to get mostly filler. On the other hand, after the top couple of titles, the quality of the releases plummets really fast. On the one hand, there are some terrific films that should do really well. It's a strange week for home market releases.
